Alicia Penney
Another week has gone by and it's time for another First Show Friday! This week we had the pleasure of talking to the amazing Alicia Penney! Here's what she had to say.
“One of the things about me is I sometimes forget important moments in my life, haha. I don't think I remember playing my first show. I remember going to the long wall CD release in 1999 and being super impressed with Pulse, 77 Impala Special and Guilttrip. Not long after I was playing in a nu metal band called InVain, and I am sure we played at the Whitney Pier Youth Club. I think my first show with Yellow was a Gobblefest show that took place in the foyer of the Savoy, and I remember being nervous and super excited. Colleen Power and Andrea Curry played too, and I didn't notice until years after that all the acts at the show had female musicians, and that is probably the reason we got booked, and not because we were incredibly awesome as i had thought, haha.
Alicia has played a vital role in the Cape Breton music scene for many years now, playing in many bands, and by herself.
“The thing that really drew me in was discovering this whole other culture of punk and rock shows, and just feeling so comfortable and welcomed there. The energy was something I hadn't experienced until that point and I just wanted to be a part of it. I saw Rock Ranger play and just got transported to another dimension and decided instantly that i wanted a band that sounded like THAT. of course now i play lots of other genres of music, mostly the quieter type, but i still get that feeling sometimes at all ages shows, just being surrounded with my people and the magical raw energy of aggressive music.”
