Dale Fahey

Hello everybody!! Happy Friday - like always, we're back with another great local musician to talk about the first show they played!!

“The first show that I ever played was on Friday the 13th of April in 2001 and was very special for a few reasons.”

“For starters, I had just started to play second guitar for a skronky indie rock band called The Spincycle Squared who were around for a few years and I was already a big fan. Their 1999 EP called Amped was a big deal for me and Alfred Remo was my favorite local singer and songwriter. My pal since age six Sean MacGillivary and another best friend Seth Smith were also in the band at this time! I was 23 years old and had been going to shows for 6 years at that point but never found the right fit for a band that actually got out and played. I was more focused on doing other music related things like band photography for about four years and had just started a small record label so playing guitar had often been pushed to the side. It did however always take up a lot of my spare time and still does. Going to shows has always been my favorite thing to do without a doubt so the bottom line was that it was really awesome to be actually playing one even though I was more into the other stuff. One more quick thing that I forgot about for a long time was that I also made the poster for a show which included the last minute addition of a snippet from Seth's comics.

“It was an all ages show at the pavilion (a legendary Halifax venue) with local heavy hitters Rock Ranger and a couple of cool bands called Kaico Green and The Moot Snoopers. It was a fun gig and we played all of the songs one would expect from that era of Spincycle plus a new song. I vividly remember tearing three of the strings off my guitar and falling from the pavilion stage to the floor during the noise part at the end of our last song of the set. None of these things were planned at all and it was a pretty good show. Most of our shows were good and fun but some of em were pretty messed up or wacky for many different reasons. I wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe that one boxing day set at the Maple Leaf where we went on stage at 3:09am”

Dale has played in countless bands including Keep On Pushing Buttons, Wisdom Earle, Wrote Off, The Sycamores, Mess Folk, F**** Montreal, The Shithawks, Carmen Townsend band, Sweet Zombie Jesus, Marvin Wants To Know, The Meat Curtains, and many more!

“Currently I play guitar in a garage rock outfit called Trash Brain and am excited about our new release Hot as Luv which is up on Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp, and all that wacky stuff. Love these folks and we have lots of fun jamming and playing. We are just crawling back out of the dirt now after two years of COVID-induced purgatory. Great pals well before we started the band and in my eyes it is quite different from anything else I have been involved with.”

“First photo here is from a Spincycle show a few months after my first with the band and the second is a pic of Trash Brain at one of our last shows before we went on the aforementioned hiatus. The poster is the one mentioned above.”

“Fun times!”

Big thanks to Dale Fahey for talking to us this week! Well see ya next week for another First Show Friday!!
